This Guidance for using the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions accompanies the Global Standard to provide the scientific basis and guidance for users.

   

The IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions lists the Criteria and Indicators, as adopted by the 98th Meeting of the IUCN Council in 2020.

O aumento do risco de mudança climática deixa as comunidades do Rio Doce mais vulneráveis a eventos como inundações, deslizamentos de terra e erosão costeira, indicando a necessidade de políticas e investimentos para gerar resiliência institucional e social para a adaptação à mudança climática, principalmente no que diz respeito à saúde humana e à saúde dos ecossistemas. O relatório destaca ameaças relacionadas à mudança climática na Bacia do Rio Doce e propõe recomendações para que a Fundação Renova, formuladores de políticas e sociedade possam integrar a perspectiva da mudança climática aos esforços de restauração.

Increased risk of climate change makes the communities in the Rio Doce more vulnerable to events, such as flooding, landslides and coastal erosion, indicating the need for policies and investments to build institutional and  societal resilience for climate change adaptation, particularly in regard to human and ecosystem health. This report outlines the threats related to climate change in the Rio Doce Basin and proposes recommendations to the Renova Foundation, policymakers and society to integrate climate into their restoration efforts.

Connectivity conservation is essential for managing healthy ecosystems, conserving biodiversity and adapting to climate change across all biomes and spatial scales. Well-connected ecosystems support a diversity of ecological functions such as migration, hydrology, nutrient cycling, pollination, seed dispersal, food security, climate resilience and disease resistance. These Guidelines are based on the best available science and practice for maintaining, enhancing and restoring ecological connectivity among and between protected areas, other effective areas based conservation measures (OECMs) and other intact ecosystems. For the first time, this publication introduces a common definition and recommends formal recognition of ecological corridors to serve as critical building blocks of ecological networks in conjunction with protected areas and OECMs. Furthermore, these Guidelines also include 25 case studies that demonstrate current approaches to conserving ecological connectivity and ecological networks for different ecosystems and species, and at different spatial and temporal scales.

Protected areas are a key component of any global conservation strategy. Tourism provides a crucial and unique way of fostering visitors’ connection with protected area values, making it a potentially positive force for  conservation. Protected area tourism’s economic benefits – which depend on beautiful natural areas, healthy wildlife and nature, and authentic cultures – can also be a powerful argument for conservation. Tourism in protected areas  is a major part of the global tourism industry – an industry whose scale and impacts are enormous. Such a high volume of visitors implies certain needs for fundamental infrastructure and requirements for employment and human services, all of which have ramifications for the economy, society, culture and the environment. These Guidelines provide guidance on key issues to help managers achieve sustainable tourism in protected areas.

The high amount of land used for cultivation and livestock farming has dramatically shaped landscapes in Europe and throughout the rest of the world. Agriculture is a fundamental human activity that intrinsically depends on nature and at the same time poses a threat to it. Thus, sustainability has emerged as a necessity in future agricultural policy and practice. Sustainable agriculture will need first and foremost to consider two inseparable, intertwined societal priorities – preserving the environment and providing safe and healthy food for all. It will be necessary for all sectors and stakeholders involved in the food system and nature conservation to find a common path for the future which embraces these two priorities. This report shows that different approaches to sustainable agriculture exist, that they have a number of important commonalities, but also that their diversity is a strength in itself. The choice of approach depends very much on local contexts and specific priorities. The challenge for policymaking is to enable dialogue and create the (market or regulatory) environment that will help prioritise according to local contexts, helping land managers follow the societally desired path.

   

In 2016, IUCN uplisted the western chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes verus, from “Endangered” to “Critically Endangered”, reflecting the subspecies’ increasingly dire conservation status. Of the four recognised chimpanzee subspecies, Pan troglodytes verus is under the greatest threat. The current plan presents the status and threats to P. t. verus, based on expert evaluation of the best scientific knowledge available to date. A considerable amount of new data has improved our knowledge of the distribution and status patterns of this subspecies since the first action plan was published in 2003, and an analysis of the threats to chimpanzee populations highlights the need to address these threats and their drivers. This action plan highlights how concerned stakeholders can harmonise their efforts, emphasising the critical role of regional coordination and inter- and multarget_idisciplinary approaches in conserving the western chimpanzee. Finally, this plan also seeks to be dynamic, embedded in a monitoring and evaluation framework that will keep priorities and strategies relevant, updating objectives and information on threats as anthropogenic and ecological pressures evolve across West Africa.

   

En 2016, l’UICN a requalifié le statut de conservation du chimpanzé d’Afrique de l’Ouest, Pan troglodytes verus, qui est passé de la catégorie « en danger » à la catégorie « en danger critique d’extinction », reflétant ainsi la situation désastreuse de cette sous-espèce. Parmi les quatre sous-espèces reconnues de chimpanzés, Pan troglodytes verus est la plus menacée. Ce plan présente le statut de conservation de P. t. verus et les menaces sur cette sous-espèce, sur la base d’une évaluation par des experts des meilleures informations scientifiques disponibles. Grâce à de nouvelles données, nous connaissons mieux la distribution et la situation de cette sous-espèce depuis la publication en 2003 du premier plan d’action. Une analyse des menaces met en évidence la nécessité de trouver des réponses à ces menaces et à leurs facteurs. Ce plan d’action montre comment les parties prenantes peuvent harmoniser leurs efforts et souligne le rôle critique de la coordination régionale et des approches inter- et multarget_idisciplinaires pour la conservation du chimpanzé d’Afrique de l’Ouest.

   

La iguana de cola espinosa En Peligro de Roatán (Ctenosaura oedirhina) se encuentra solo en las islas de Roatán, Barbareta y los cayos circundantes. Aunque se pueden encontrar poblaciones densas en algunos lugares privados protegidos, las amenazas persisten y aun se necesitan esfuerzos de gestión. La iguana de cola espinosa de Roatán se describió por primera vez en 1987 y desde entonces se han realizado estudios informales y detallados para comprender mejor su biología y estado. En el 2010, comenzó un programa de monitoreo a largo plazo, aclarando las fluctuaciones en la dinámica de la población y sus amenazas. Este documento presenta un plan integral de cinco años para las acciones de conservación y manejo consideradas esenciales para asegurar la supervivencia a largo plazo de la Ctenosaura oedirhina en la naturaleza. Este plan combina el conocimiento y la experiencia del gobierno, las organizaciones no gubernamentales y la comunidad de Roatán y Honduras, con la experiencia colectiva del Grupo Especialista en Iguanas de la CSE de la UICN.

   

The Endangered Roatán spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura oedirhina) is found only on the islands of Roatán, Barbareta, and some surrounding cays. Although dense populations can be found in some privately protected locations, threats persist and management efforts are needed. The Roatán spiny-tailed iguana was first described in 1987 and since then informal and detailed studies have been conducted to better understand its biology and status. In 2010, a long-term monitoring program began, elucidating fluctuations in population dynamics and threats. This document presents a comprehensive five-year plan for the conservation and management actions considered essential to ensuring the long-term survival of Ctenosaura oedirhina in the wild. This plan combines knowledge and expertise from government, nongovernmental organizations, and the community of Roatán and greater Honduras, with the collective expertise of the IUCN SSC Iguana Specialist Group.

 

   

This report aims to provide an overview of the current status of protected area finance in the Southern and Eastern African region, covering 24 countries, to understand the extent of the challenge. The report also outlines the different innovative finance mechanisms that might be used to help decrease the funding gap. This report is meant to support protected area authorities and governments in understanding mechanisms for increasing funding for conservation management and to help the International Union for the Conservation of Nature design effective programmes that will help mitigate funding gaps and sustainability challenges for protected areas in Africa and support the capacity development of protected area managers.
