Closing strategy : ending ivory trade in Hong Kong

Hong Kong was once a prominent trading centre for ivory in the 1970s and 1980s, but the industry contracted considerably following the implementation of CITES trade restrictions in 1990, and waning demand from traditional overseas consumers. However, resurgence in international ivory trade activity in the past decade, both legal and illegal, have also reinvigorated Hong Kong’s local ivory market. This has led many conservation advocates to campaign for a ban on ivory trade in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Government’s proposal to phase out local ivory trade, which was first announced in January 2016 and developed in June 2016, as well as additional enforcement and licensing measures, would be a significant commitment if passed through Hong Kong’s Legislative Council. This report presents an assessment of commercial ivory trade in Hong Kong. Market surveys of ivory outlets were conducted during two periods—August and December 2015—with a rapid survey in November 2016 revisiting most of the same shops.

Background paper for livelihoods module workshop

This paper has been prepared to inform discussions at the upcoming Livelihoods Module development workshop organised by the People in Nature (PiN) team. The workshop will build on discussions from 2013-16 between the PiN team and the Species Programme and TRAFFIC around the integration of PiN and the Red List of Threatened Speciesusing the Species Information Service. In addition to working on the content and architecture of the livelihoods module, the workshop will also identify key elements of the processes and protocols that need to be put into place to ensure the consistent application of the livelihoods module and the rigour of data collected.
Overview of the conservation status of Mediterranean anthozoa

This report presents the conservation status of the anthozoans occuring in the Mediterranean Sea, based on the assessment of 136 species using the IUCN Red List methodology. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level to guide appropriate conservation actions in order to improve their status.

The conservation status of marine bony shorefishes of the Greater Caribbean

The greater Caribbean biogeographic region covered in this report (representing 38 countries and territories) encompasses an outstanding marine bony shorefish richness of approximately 1,360 species, with many (53%) being endemic. This report provides an overview of the conservation status of greater Caribbean shorefishes, with detailed information available through the IUCN Red List, and gives recommendations.

The Pacific Islands of Oceania are small islands and atolls occurring over a vast expanse of ocean that are characterized by immense biodiversity and endemism. This project represents a major expansion of the coverage of the Pacific Islands’ marine biodiversity on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The threats to Pacific Island marine biodiversity are many. Results from IUCN Red List initiatives such as this can guide decision-making and conservation prioritization of Pacific Island governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector. By shaping regional and national policies with these data in mind, priority sites for maintaining marine biodiversity can be identified and conserved.
Gender-responsive restoration guidelines
   

The Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) was developed by IUCN and the World Resources Institute (WRI) to assist countries in identifying opportunities for forest landscape restoration (FLR), analysing priority areas at a national or sub-national level, and designing and implementing FLR interventions. As part of IUCN’s effort to update the methodology, these guidelines have been developed to ensure the application of ROAM and the ensuing FLR implementation, including any policy uptake and land-use planning, is gender responsive.

Valeur économique des services écosystémiques du Parc National de l’Ichkeul, Tunisie

Le Parc National de l’Ichkeul se situe au Nord-Est de la Tunisie à 75 Km de Tunis. Il occupe 12.600 ha, couvrant successivement la montagne (1.363 ha), le lac Ichkeul (8.500 ha), et les marécages (2.737 ha). Le lac et les marais sont depuis longtemps reconnus comme l’une des principales zones humides du bassin occidental de la Méditerranée. Cette étude vise à évaluer la valeur économique des services écosystémiques rendus par le parc national de l’Ichkeul (PNI). Cette évaluation permettra de renforcer les connaissances sur le site et de sensibiliser davantage les décideurs et les usagers pour assurer la conservation et l’utilisation durable des différentes composantes de la biodiversité. Ceci permettra aussi de concilier les objectifs du PNI avec les attentes et les  aspirations de la population locale, notamment en termes d’usage et de valorisation des produits.
Natural marine World Heritage in the Arctic Ocean
   

The 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention unites nations behind a shared commitment to preserve the world’s outstanding cultural and natural heritage for the benefit of present and future generations. This report presents the results of a scientific assessment of globally significant ecosystems in the Arctic Ocean that may be of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) with respect to the natural criteria for World Heritage status. The report is intended to advance recognition and conservation of globally significant natural marine sites in the Arctic, a region which is currently under-represented on the World Heritage List. The report does not assess potential OUV related to cultural heritage, which was beyond the scope of the project.
Solutions bleues de l'Afrique
   

Cette publication est un résultat du troisième Forum régional pour les océans, les côtes et le bien-être humain en Afrique de Blue Solutions qui s’est tenu au printemps 2016. Elle compile 32 solutions bleues de l’Afrique dont la plupart ont été présentées pendant l’événement. Les solutions résumées dans la présente publication mettent l’accent sur des thèmes tels que les aires marines protégées, le tourisme durable, la pêche durable, les moyens de subsistance durables, la préservation des ressources et de la biodiversité et l’atténuation des effets du changement climatique. C’est un guide passionnant des activités et projets menés en Afrique en faveur de la protection de l’environnement et de la gestion intégrée et durable de ses écosystèmes côtiers et marins précieux et vulnérables.
