Blue solutions from Latin America and the wider Caribbean
   

This publication is a result of Blue Solutions’ second Regional Forum on Solutions for Oceans, Coasts and Human Well-being in Latin America and the Wider Caribbean Region. This four-day workshop was held in Cancún, Mexico in April 2015. During this event more than 40 participants presented their positive examples and engaged with the larger audience in discussions around how these examples can be adapted to address pressing challenges faced in other regions or sectors in Latin America and the Wider Caribbean. This publication compiles 50 blue solutions from Latin America and the Wider Caribbean region, most of which were presented. The cases are summarized within this publication and focus on topics such as marine protected areas, sustainable tourism, sustainable fisheries, sustainable livelihoods, conservation of resources and biodiversity and mitigation of the effects of climate change. It is an inspiring guide through activities and projects towards the protection and integrated, sustainable management of valuable and vulnerable coastal and marine ecosystems.

It provides an overview of the main environmental according to experts from various institutions, and the challenges that those threats pose at present and in the future. In addition, it deals with the specificities of the legal and governance framework in the region. The objective is that all this information will provide journalists with as detailed a picture as possible of the environmental situation in the Mediterranean to serve as the basis for future press stories to be explored and developed.

Esta guía se ofrece como una herramienta de consulta para los periodistas ambientales de la región mediterránea. Hace un repaso a través de los expertos consultados procedentes de distintas instituciones sobre los principales problemas ambientales que afronta el Mediterráneo, así como por los retos que esas amenazas plantean en el presente y en el futuro. A continuación se abordan las peculiaridades del marco legal y de gobernanza que existe en la región.  El objetivo es que con toda esta información el periodista logre una foto lo más detallada posible de la situación ambiental del Mediterráneo y que esta imagen le sirva de base para futuras historias periodísticas a indagar y desarrollar.

Songsters of Singapore : an overview of the bird species in Singapore pet shops

Singapore has a long history of involvement in the bird trade. To understand further the bird trade industry in Singapore, TRAFFIC undertook a rapid assessment of the open bird trade in Singapore’s pet shops. Surveys of 39 pet shops, listed by AVA as licensed to sell birds, were conducted over four days in November and December 2015. A full inventory of the species and volumes in trade was documented, excluding domesticated species. This report provides a snapshot of the current composition and availability of openly traded birds in Singapore’s AVA-licensed bird selling pet shops.

Primary microplastics in the oceans

Plastic has penetrated everyday life, and the disadvantages of plastics are becoming more and more visible: large quantities of plastics leak into rivers and oceans, with adverse effects to marine ecosystems and related economic activities. This report is one of the first of its kind to quantify primary microplastics leakage and to demonstrate that these primary microplastics are globally responsible for a major source of plastics in the oceans.

This report provides a first comprehensive overview of marine conservation efforts in the European Overseas: In the context of rapid global development in these areas, it takes stock and pinpoints the actions required to improve marine protection and strengthen resilience in these diverse territories and to reconcile this with the opportunities provided by development of the blue economy and the challenges in the face of climate change. Collaborative approaches and planning are required to ensure connectivity within operational, well-managed networks of marine protected areas to ensure the resilience of the ecosystems they protect.

Guidelines for the application of IUCN Red List of Ecosystems categories and criteria
   

The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems is a global framework for monitoring the status of ecosystems. It is part of the growing toolbox for assessing risks to biodiversity and aims to support conservation, resource use, and management decisions by identifying ecosystems most at risk of biodiversity loss. The basis of the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems is the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems Categories and Criteria, a set of eight categories and five criteria that provide a consistent method for assessing the risk of ecosystem collapse. These Guidelines assist correct implementation of the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems Categories and Criteria by providing information on the development of the protocol and a detailed overview of the scientific foundations supporting the categories and criteria.

Repairing domestic climate displacement
   

Following several years of preparatory work across the globe, legal scholars, judges, UN officials and climate change experts from 11 countries came together to finalise a new normative framework aiming to strengthen the right of climate-displaced persons, households and communities. This resulted in the approval of the Peninsula Principles on Climate Displacement within States in August 2013. This book provides detailed explanations and interpretations of the Peninsula Principles and includes in-depth discussion of the legal, policy and programmatic efforts needed to uphold the standards and norms embedded in the Principles. The book provides policy-makers with the conceptual understanding necessary to ensure that national-level policies are in place to respond to the climate displacement challenge, as well as a firm sense of the programme-level approaches that can be taken to anticipate, reduce and manage climate displacement. It also provides students and policy advocates with the necessary information to debate and critique responses to climate displacement at different levels.
