This policy brief explores the issues of ICCAs and overlapping protected areas, discusses key approaches for appropriately recognising, respecting, and supporting overlapped ICCAs, and offers recommendations.

The resource use implications and environmental impacts of our food systems are significant. In general, of all economic activities, the food sector has by far the largest impact on natural resource use as well as on the environment. The Food Systems working group of the International Resource Panel has prepared a comprehensive scientific assessment of the current status and dynamics of natural resource use in food systems and their environmental impacts. It identifies opportunities for Resource Smart Food Systems responding to policy-relevant questions. The report looks at food as a crucial connection point (a ‘node’) where various societal issues coincide, such as human dependence on natural resources, the environment, health and wellbeing. Rather than looking separately at resources such as land, water and minerals, the IRP has chosen a systems approach. The report looks at all the resources needed for the primary production of food, as well as for other food system activities (e.g. processing, distribution) considering not only the set of activities, but also the range of actors engaged  in them and the outcomes in terms of food security,  livelihoods and human health.

The purpose of the Manual of Diagnostic Tests for Aquatic Animals (the Aquatic Manual) is to provide a standardised approach to the diagnosis of the diseases listed in the Aquatic Code, to facilitate health certification for trade in aquatic animals and aquatic animal products.

The Mediterranean region is widely recognised as one of the world’s most sensitive environmental, political, social, economic and cultural hotspots, yet there are many complex and interconnected issues to address. However, the emergence of the Green Economy concept, as coined at the global Rio+20 Sustainable Development summit, is a serious attempt to promote a more inclusive and environmentally-friendly economic development at both global and local level with a high potential, if applied properly, of reducing social inequalities, enhancing the quality of life and well-being of communities on both the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean. In this report, we first describe the Green Economy approach and other sustainability-related concepts and frameworks. Then we identify and examine major Green Economy and Sustainable Development initiatives and actors at international and Mediterranean levels. A description of the methodology and findings of the study (overall and country specific) follows, comprising the main part of document. Complementary information on financing issues has been included before closing with a set of recommendations that if implemented can significantly boost a greener and more inclusive economy in the Mediterranean region.

This policy brief examines the existing Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) and ratified National Determined Contributions (NDCs) with regard to the inclusion of specific efforts addressing blue carbon ecosystems, namely mangroves, target_idal saltmarshes and seagrasses, as climate mitigation or adaptation solutions.

This report explores how much nature we have and how much we use, in Korea and the world. It invites the Korean government, business sector and public to rethink the country’s roles and vulnerabilities in a world with increasing resource constraints and climate change threats. It encourages all to create strategies to help Korea overcome these imminent challenges.

CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) was opened for signature in Washington DC on 3rd March 1973, and to date has 182 Parties from across the world. If CITES is to remain a credible instrument for conserving species affected by trade, the decisions of the Parties must be based on the best available scientific and technical information. Recognizing this, IUCN and TRAFFIC have undertaken technical reviews of the proposals to amend the CITES Appendices. The Analyses - as these technical reviews are known - aim to provide as objective an assessment as possible of each amendment proposal against the requirements of the Convention as laid out in the listing criteria elaborated in Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP16) and other relevant Resolutions and Decisions. Unfortunately, due to a challenging fundraising environment and the high number of proposals, the funds necessary to conduct the Analyses and present them in the same manner as for previous Conference of the Parties (CoPs), were not found. Therefore, instead of producing the highly-detailed summary section and accompanying table for each proposal as we have done in previous years, for CoP17 we have instead produced a summary section for every proposal.

The standards in the Aquatic Code are based on the most recent scientific and technical information and have been formally adopted by the World Assembly of OIE Delegates. They are also recognised as the international standard for aquatic animal health within the World Trade Organization Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures. The Aquatic Code should be used by the Competent Authorities of importing and exporting countries for early detection, reporting and control of agents pathogenic to aquatic animals, and to prevent their transfer via international trade in aquatic animals and their products, while avoiding unjustified sanitary barriers to trade.

As species extinction, environmental protection, animal rights, and workplace safety issues come to the fore, zoos and aquariums need keepers who have the technical expertise and scientific knowledge to keep animals healthy, educate the public, and create regional, national, and global conservation and management communities. This textbook offers a comprehensive and practical overview of the profession geared toward new animal keepers and anyone who needs a foundational account of the topics most important to the day-to-day care of zoo and aquarium animals.

This resource material is designed as a generic guide for planning, implementing and reporting an integrated vulnerability assessment (IVA) that targets atoll communities in the Pacific Islands region. It is based on a sustainable livelihoods-based approach that combines the assessment of vulnerability to both climate change and disasters.

The first issue of Volume 35 of the Scientific and Technical Review provides a collection of in-depth articles on potential applications of pathogen genomics. The increasing power of high-throughput sequencing, bioinformatics and computational biology have revolutionised most aspects of biomedical and veterinary sciences. Such new technologies and tools have also had a big impact on the diagnosis, control and management of animal diseases.

This overview of the roles of alien species in insect conservation brings together information, evidence and examples from many parts of the world to illustrate their impacts (often severe, but in many cases poorly understood and unpredictable) as one of the primary drivers of species declines, ecological changes and biotic homogenisation.

    Bowyer, Jim L.

In The Irresponsible Pursuit of Paradise, Dr. Jim L. Bowyer clearly documents an ethically bankrupt position that underlies much of our environmental policy. High consumption in wealthy countries usually goes hand-in-hand with resistance to domestic raw materials extraction and half-hearted interest in recycling. Because of this, the world's wealthiest countries increasingly rely on imported raw materials from poorer nations to fuel consumption. This, in turn, allows citizens of wealthy countries to smugly enjoy high levels of consumption with minimal exposure to the environmental impacts of that consumption. Bowyer concludes, "Contrary to common practice today, high consuming nations need to be asking, 'Why not in my back yard?'"

The past decade has been an exciting period for foot and mouth disease (FMD) control and elimination efforts. The progressive control pathway for FMD (PCP-FMD) was developed to provide a novel stepwise methodology for a risk management and cost effective approach to FMD control. These guidelines are designed to guide and assess national or sub-national vaccination programmes at various stages of PCP-FMD; and can be equally helpful for regaining FMD free status following the incursion of FMD virus in previously free countries or those where vaccination is to be discontinued.

Illegal trade and the trafficking of Tiger Panthera tigris, as well as their parts, products and derivatives, and the poaching which supplies it, is the most immediate threat to the survival of wild tigers. This briefing document highlights top-line findings from the detailed analysis over the 16 years, including key occurrences and patterns over the period assessed. Key recommendations are provided for consideration by actors at national, regional and international levels.

    Dempsey, Jessica

This book tracks the rise of a powerful idea in global biodiversity conservation. Many scientists, bureacrats, and environmentalists now believe that the only way  to slow the decimation of nonhuman life on earth is to translate conservation into an economically rational -- even profitable -- set of policies and practices. Through multi-sited analysis, Jessica Dempsey explores the drive to produce a nature that can prove its value in economic terms, a nature that can compete in the marketplace and the cost-benefit accounting of modern governance.
