The aquatic ecosystems of Białowieża National Park

This monograph is devoted to the aquatic organisms inhabiting the different kinds of bodies of water present in Białowieża National Park. The publication offers the results of the 2015 inventorying of the aquatic habitats and organisms in the park. It marks the first time the Park's waters have been studied by such a large team of specialists hailing from various scientific centres across Poland. The result is a valuable documentation of the current state of this area's aquatic ecosystems, offering the reader a full depiction of the wealth of hydrobionts and diversity of environments they inhabit.

The Sixaola River basin, Costa Rice and Panama : reaching agreements to strengthen transboundary cooperation

The Sixaola river basin is shared between Costa Rica and Panama. Since 2011, the BRIDGE project: Building River Dialogue and Governance has worked to promote better cooperation around transboundary waters, implementing a non-conventional approach for hydrodiplomacy. This document summarizes the socioeconomic context of the basin, existing institutional arrangements, interventions by the BRIDGE project and advances of the Binational Commission of the Sixaola River Basin.
Pacific islands meteorological services in action : a compendium of climate services case studies
   

In a large, diverse region like the Pacific, clear and concise communication of both successes and lessons learned is vital for further effective development. A workshop was created to help the participants develop stories to "tell the world what the Pacific is doing on climate services." The week-long writing workshop or "writeshop" created a space for climate service providers to learn outreach writing skills and how to analyse their own efforts. The writeshop was coordinated by SPREP and WMO with support from COSPPac and Environment and Climate Change Canada. This first writeshop for climate services in the Pacific was a productive and intense week of growth for the participants, resulting in 20 stories for a regional compendium.

The manual provides guidance for States Parties and all those involved in the care of World Heritage cultural properties on how to comply with the requirements of the Convention. It also aims to help States Parties to ensure that heritage has a dynamic role in society and harnesses, but also delivers to others, the mutual benefits that such a role can create. This Manual deals only with the management of cultural heritage sites. Natural World Heritage properties have many similar issues but they also have different problems.

Winning the environment : the ecosystem approach and its value for military operations

After a short introduction of the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM), the present presentation develops the application of the ecosystem approach by the military sector, in particular in relation to peace-support operations and reconstruction programmes. It describes a simple model of 4 steps. The first step deals with the physical system (“the ecosystem”), the second step with the use of the ecosystem and the third step with its management (institutions and regulations). The fourth step guides the military in taking decisions what (not) to do given the information from steps 1, 2 and 3.

Illegal killing and trade is a major threat to wildlife particularly in Africa. The current levels of elephant and rhino poaching are the highest in decades driven by burgeoning demand for ivory. East African countries, especially Tanzania, are increasingly implicated as source or transit countries for illegal ivory and rhino horn. It is against this backdrop that IUCN, in collaboration with the University of Dar es Salaam, has carried out this analysis of court cases related to illegal wildlife trade in mainland Tanzania with the aim of providing information to strengthen the judicial chain with regards to wildlife legislation.

The Global Soil Biodiversity Atlas is a collection of images, text, and figures presenting the importance of soil biology to policy makers, experts, and general readers alike.

Key highlights include:

Soil biodiversity supports many services essential to human beings including: plant growth, water and climate regulation, and disease control among others.  Soil biodiversity is increasingly under threats due to several pressures acting on soils.  Interventions to reduce the impact of threats to soil biodiversity are available and should be widely adopted.  Policies to protect and value soil biodiversity are still at an early stage and need to be further developed. 

The Atlas is divided into 8 chapters covering all the aspects of soil biodiversity:

Protecting natural areas and ecosystems is not anti-development. This report shows that by conserving large areas of habitat, natural World Heritage sites also increase resilience to natural and weather-related disasters, support livelihoods for communities, and provide communities with vital protection against the impacts of climate change.
